Harvesting takes place in July / August time but can continue into September. Throughout Europe, flax crops will be gathered in by a machine which pulls the plant out of the ground and leaves the stems led out in the field. In the UK, we don't have machinery so we pull our flax by hand.

By this time the stems are turning away from the vibrant green to a yellow brown straw colour. We pull the stems out in small bunches pulling to get the whole length of the crop. This helps get the retting stage started but also means you get the longest possible length of fibre. The stems are led out on the ground in thick mats of approx. 2 metres with a gap between each row.
